Racing on a fixed income and $4 gas?

Is there anyone else out there trying to race with $4 gas and a fixed income?  If so, what adjustments have you had to make in your lifestyle to still be able to race?  I have not raced since May for two reasons: One is $4 a gallon gas and the other is it's too damned hot out here in the desert!  We have had 17 or 18 consecutive days with a high temperature of 110+ degrees!  Yea, I know, it's a "dry" heat but it's still hot!

The wife and I are both retired and live on our Social Security income and a monthly draw from our retirement plan which is tied up in annuities and can't be adjusted without being hit with a penalty.  This was set up prior to the big shift in fuel prices.

We have consolidated as many trips as possible and only get to see our grandkids once a month or so when we used to make the trip across town almost every week!

Let me know what you have done!

Guy, I wished I had your $4.00 gas. It's $4.59 here.

I haven't been out in a month cause it's just too damn hot.

It ain't no fun and it's too hard on my equipment, much less the race truck.

So, I guess, the weather has helped me save money.

Knowing you, I am sure the choice between a tall cool one and a lucious blond in the A/C certainly outweighed $4 gas and the heat of summer in CA! I actually bought gas yesterday for less than $4 for the first time in a couple of months! It was $3.9999 a gallon for 87 proof at Costco!  And was proud of my wife!  Calculated the mileage since the previous fill up and she got 20.1 mpg in our 2005 Trailblazer using the A/C!  Guess it does pay to top off that tank to cut down on evaporation when it is setting in the garage!

It's too hot here also, but I would if I could but I need to put the motor back in after fixing the dropped valve. I can't do that yet as I tore up my shoulder again.  I bought a 55gallon drum of avgas last year at $3.00 a gal for 112 octane so thats not a problem yet.  oh that blonde is my dog

You Guys are LUCKY

We dragrace in New Zealand

We pay $2.18 per litre   4 litres per gallon, race fuel more expensive than that.  Our NZ$1 is worth US$.75cents at present, it's hard for all of us, and can you imagine when we need to buy american parts to dragrace, with the difference in our dollar, what it costs us, but hey american parts are the best in the world, we think you guys are so lucky.

I guess world wide we are feeling the costs of fuel and the cost of living, we live with an expensive sport and usually find some way to fund the thing we love doing the most. Good Luck to you all

Hey, contact us if any of you ae thinking of coming to NZ

I am probably the only American drag racer who has a New Zealand dragstrip decal on the their race car trailer.  I have an area on my enclosed trailer reserved just for dragstrip decals.  I haven' exerted a lot of effort to expanding it recently but I do have one on one side of my trailer from Lakeside Raceway in New Zealand that a friend gave me and display it proudly.  I could use one for the other side of the trailer and a couple from any other track you have down there!  Also run decals on the track in Maui, Hawaii where a friend of mine races.  I loaned him a car back in 2005 to race the Race of Champions at the ET Finals at Speedworld Motorplex in Super Pro in NHRA Division 7 and he won it!  He gave me a dupicate Wally for providing him with the winning car!   It was a real Cinderella story!  Good to hear from other parts of the world on here.  A 55 gallon drum of Torco race fuel (110) cost me about $330 (U.S.) last time I bought it.  I am a dealer for Hoosier Tires and I mark up my cost $10 per tire plus shipping.  If I can ever be of help let me know.

Ike from IH Racing chiming in.....we also had to revise the 2nd half of our 20 race schedule due to unforeseen parts breakage and of course the gas prices. We were going to race in Norwalk Ohio in August, and Tennessee, and Pennsylvania.....but we are based out of Florida, so we are now just running the remaining 12 races in Florida.

We have a partial fuel sponsorship from VP Racing Fuels, so the race fuel is not a problem,  but it is interesting to note that although we have a lot of other high-dollar sponsors, our budget was eaten up during the 1st half of the season traveling to: Kentucky, Virginia, Georgia, and Tennessee.

The highlight of the season so far has got to be the 2 PINKS All Out we did - 1 in Gainesville, FL, where we were aired on PINKS Outtakes, and 1 in Atlanta, GA where we should be on SPEED TV Aug 14th at 9pm. As you looked out at over 400 RVs, race trailers, etc Fri morning and then the 25,000+ spectators on Sat, you would have thought gas and diesel was a buck a gallon and the economy was humming along.....just goes to show, if someone wants to race bad enough, they will find a way to get it done.

I'm still building. The way things are looking now, I think I'll hold off on buying the engine until things settle down some. The way things are going I may need that engine money to buy gas & groceries.
